Wisdom…

Reading through Proverbs is something I enjoy doing. King Solomon was the wisest man that lived, and his observations in life still work for today. When he became king, he was overwhelmed with the thought of the responsibilities that came with that status, and asked God for wisdom. Because he asked for wisdom instead of anything else, God rewarded him with an abundance of wisdom, and with everything else a man could desire.

So often I get caught in the trap of thinking that wisdom results in success and money. It is something that I find ingrained into my idea of what success is. Yet, some of the wisest people I have met aren’t successful in the monetary sense…and some really successful people aren’t exactly wise, and that’s easy to see when you read about them in the media. Is wisdom something that is relevant for today? Do we really know what it is? Is it “book smarts” or “street smarts”?

So, what is wisdom? Continue reading Wisdom…

One of “those weeks”

It’s been one of those weeks. They are unavoidable, and they have a way of bringing ones attitude into the dumps. The electricity has been off 75% of the time…causing the food to go bad, the water isn’t running, the temperatures are hovering at 35 Celsius every day…and the dust is flying, my rosacea is acting up and I look like a smallpox patient, I burned the food this morning and I ran out of milk for my tea! My self-pity levels are pretty high! hahaaa!!!

I did wallow in this funk for a little. “Suffering for Jesus” is supposed to look a little different, isn’t it? This all just makes me look like a whiner, not a martyr…and I want Jesus to see that I am sacrificing and living a life for Him. Obviously I can’t be useful in His kingdom when I am preoccupied with all these menial issues.

the love guarantee

This last week we were dealing with a very sick co-worker, and it made me think… what guarantees do we have in this life? So many of us want a guarantee, and for some, decisions aren’t made unless there is one. Because of this lack of a sure thing, some won’t make any real choices…and live a life on the surface.

The few things that are almost always guaranteed are, pain, heartbreak, infatuation, love, disappointment, betrayal, hope, PMS…and other hormonal issues, change, surprise, and death. (yes, this is my personal list!)

The Sower

So many times the parable of the sower has been taught, in church and in Sunday school. It didn’t hit me until the other day, that it actually has some merit in my daily life as well. For most of my life I have had the soil that doesn’t really absorb much, and the weeds come and destroy what I do start growing. If I let my life get cluttered with things that don’t really matter…then the Word doesn’t have any place to grow.

“A farmer went out to sow his seed. Some of it fell on the road; it was tramped down and the birds ate it. Other seed fell in the gravel; it sprouted, but withered because it didn’t have good roots. Other seed fell in the weeds; the weeds grew with it and strangled it. Other seed fell in rich earth and produced a bumper crop.

“Are you listening to this? Really listening?” His disciples asked, “Why did you tell this story?” He said, “You’ve been given insight into God’s kingdom—you know how it works. There are others who need stories. But even with stories some of them aren’t going to get it: Their eyes are open but don’t see a thing, Their ears are open but don’t hear a thing. Fast Food!

Everywhere you look there is a new method for getting something fast. There is fast food, rapid weight loss, instant love connection online, and quick spiritual fixes. Read this, eat this, do that…and life is instantly better. I think that’s why so many companies go with network marketing, they feed us that quick-fix mentality that we have been conditioned to. Instant riches! Fancy cars! I, personally, have been duped this way a few times. The thing is…some do get success this way, why can’t it be me? Continue reading Fast Food!

“Just Sayin'”

This last week I had the privilege of being part of a mini mission conference, learning with and from my colleagues. A real blessing and encouragement. During one of the breakout sessions we were discussing communication and honesty, and how difficult it can be. One of the missionaries was giving us an example of how some people can be. They pride themselves of being honest, and go even to the point of saying, “I say it like I see it.”

When we say it like we see it, we can also be quite off. What happens if we see everything from a negative viewpoint? Then everything we say comes out with that negative slant. It might sometimes be the truth, even can be most of the time…but does that mean it is really the right thing to say? What happens to the one listening to this “honesty”? Does it bring them down? Does it cause them to start seeing things from the negative point of view? What happens to their perception of us in the long run? Do they avoid us? Do they think of us as a negative person, even a negative influence? Continue reading “Just Sayin’”
