50 Shades of Mr. Darcy

The other evening I was watching Pride and Prejudice while sewing. Needless to say, Mr. Darcy caused quite a flutter and I had to rip up a few badly sewn seams. It was so refreshing to watch something that I didn’t feel a bit dirty and guilty after. No need to avert the eyes during nudity or sex scenes. Some of you might wonder why? Why do I need to avert my eyes, and why do I feel slightly dirty? After all, I am a married woman…nothing I haven’t seen before. It’s natural and the body is beautiful, and that is true…! But I find that it doesn’t ring “right” for me as a follower of Christ.

We are inundated with movies and books…full of sex and bad plot lines…all to entice us into a darker level of temptation. “It helps the married women have better love lives”…that is the argument I hear, “there is no harm in it.” As a customer of these books and movies, does it help you keep your thoughts pure? Do you need another novel a few weeks later to help you get over a “dry patch”? Does it make watching porn easier now? After all, “it brings us closer together” and “now I understand men more.”

It says in Romans 12:2 , “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (NKJV).

More and more the lines are blurred. As women we want to fit in. So we talk about sex, shopping, fitness and other people. When you think about it, does any of this bring us closer to God? Does it encourage other women who might be struggling? We are created in the image of God…His feminine side. He created our body to be His temple. 1 Corinthians 6:17-20, “But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with him. Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a person commits is outside his body, but the one who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God with your body.” Remember that there isn’t a difference between thinking and acting in Gods kingdom.

I want to encourage you to ask Him what He wants in your life. Be prepared for amazing things. Be prepared for your mind to be cleansed. Watching Mr. Darcy will be all you need to realize that relationships can be so pure and beautiful. They don’t need that worldly distraction…God created us to be creatures of love…don’t clutter it with lust.

  1. Good words, Saara!

My Mum used to get a magazine called Womens Weekly for over 30 years and I keep up the tradition. Sadly over just these last few years, those immoral values have crept, too. It used to have a blog from the Man who Sees, full of gentle wisdom, but no longer. Then there was all the time an Anglican vicar who gave such encouragement, now no longer. Am I old fashioned? When I read it now, there are no lovely old love stories but the new modern kind, and it is no longer even nice to read. Makes ones heart ache for the good old days,eh?
